February 03, 1959:
Anniversary of Buddy Holly's untimely death in a plane crash over Clear Lake, Iowa, while on tour. He was 22 years old and an expectant father at the time. He left an indelible legacy of music that went on to inspire millions, including such big-name acts as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
For an excellent biography and tribute to Buddy, I recommend The Real Buddy Holly Story, produced and hosted by Paul McCartney. The Gary Busey "Buddy Holly Story" is entertaining but a bit inaccurate! (See The Real Buddy Holly Story)
Also, my personal vote for Buddy Holly compilations: The Buddy Holly Collection, a 2-CD set spanning his career; and 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Buddy Holly. There is a lot more out there, though, especially some of his lesser-known --but excellent-- songs, that you have to hunt down on various CDs here and there. Try eBay. There are even some recordings to be found of just Buddy and his guitar, alone, on tapes he made at his home in New York (generally referred to as "the apartment tapes."
